What Does the Sad Girl Say?

Sadness is my blanket,
A dark, wonted place—
A crushing
But faithfully present weight.

My friend.

But to see Sadness in the face
of someone I love?
Oh! have those, too, been my eyes?
Dim, with that sly Shade
Foully filtering out the light.

What a revelation to find:
My dear Sadness
Is not so dear.

What does the sad girl say
to her silent and looming
Companion then?
To he who has needed me
to exist,
And I him—

My friend.
